The figurative image in white Covelano marble is a snapshot of a powerful protective movement. A fossilization in time. What does she protect? We each have our suspicions. 'Battle' represents the power with which we hold on to life, knowing it is a lonely fight, for life. The back is showing the muscles that were used in the movement of protection.
"The original title "Battle of the Remains" was given because the decline is irrefutable. All of our lives we are constantly reminded that we are here only temporary, our bodies slowly getting old and worn out and finally breaking down.
A woman taller than life.
It took me more than five years to finish the large marble piece. It was exhibited in Poperinge in 2018, during the exhibition 'Healing/heelkracht'. After that, the city of Poperinge decided to include the work in its public collection via a temporary loan agreement. The work 'Battle' is exhibited at the entrance of a care home for the elderly in Poperinge.
