Stand for memorial Andreas Vesalius - Local Chalk stone (called asbestolithos) on the island Zakinthos - Greece (2014)
A new monument is being made of an écorché or flayed man (based on one of the écorché’s in Vesalius’ De Humani Corporis Fabrica) holding a head which is a half portrait and half facial reconstruction. This bronze écorché is standing on a plinth that I made in Askos on the isle of Zakynthos, Greece. It took me two weeks to shape the 3000kg heavy plinth into the shape I was thinking about. The stone is a local limestone or asbestolithos, a very hard calcite with salt minerals and soft lines of pure chalk. On the plinth the coat of arms of Vesalius. I choose a beautiful Black Belgian Marble and worked on a drawing provided me by mr. Steeno, mr. Gooderis and mr. Biesbrouck, all three of them being experts in their search for historical reference material concerning Andreas Vesalius life and death. The three animals are weasels, thus referring to the flemish name of Vesalius - 'Van Wezele'. The helmet is carved in a three quarters position, meaning that Vesalius worked in close contact and for the emperor, without being a blood relative. Every single detail has its heraldic meaning...
